Project 1: Long Island History Museum

Comprehensive proposal for a Long Island History Museum;
Outcomes: (d) An ability to design systems, components, or processes for broadly-defined engineering
technology problems appropriate to program educational objectives
(f) An ability to identify, analyze, and solve broadly-defined engineering technology problems.
Project Program:
Site Design: Parking for 200 cars, and 12 busses. Outdoor Exhibit Space.
Museum Building: (Two Stories) is expected to be approximately 26,000 square feet, including the following:
Public Areas:
1. Indoor Exhibit Area(s).
2. Restaurant (Indoor seating at tables for 80, Outdoor summer seating at tables for 100).
3. Auditorium with stage for lecture, screen for movies. Fixed seating for 150 people.
4. Classrooms (3) for 12-15 people; 600 sq. ft. each.
5. Lounge: 30 people maximum.
6. Museum Sales Shop-1 employee; 500 square feet.
7. Public Spaces (Lobby, Ticket Sales, Information)
8. Public Toilets.
Administration:
1. Director-Office and Conference (400 sq. ft.)
2. Assistant Director/Exhibit Director (225 sq. ft.)
3. Curator Office (180 sq. ft.)
4. Director’s Secretary & Reception Area (300 sq. ft.)
5. Staff: Secretary, Bookeeper, Clerk Typist, Publicity (800 sq. ft.)
6. Storage (50 sq. ft.)
7. Private Toilets (100 sq. ft.)
8. Employee Lounge (200 sq. ft.)
9. Private Library: Seating for 8, 1000 volumes (200 sq.ft.)
Work Areas:
1. Workshop, Storage & Receiving (2,500 sq. ft.)
2. Employees: 10 Lockers
3. Employees Toilets
4. Janitor Closets
5. Mechanical Equipment Room (1,000 sq. ft.)
6. Landscape Equipment Storage (150 sq. ft.)
Design and code requirements: You will use the previous projects to assist in designing your project.
Code compliance:
1. Zoning: Town of Islip Zoning Code.
2. Building: Building Code of New York State.
Presentation Requirements (subject to change):
6 drawing sheets: All title blocks at bottom of each sheet, title of project, student name, and ARC476–Fall 2023.
All lines to be black and white and conforming to CAD guidelines; 3-D images to be color or grayscale; all spaces
to be labeled to ensure conformance with the minimum program described in the project brief.

• Exterior Elevations of all sides.
• One large three-dimensional image.
• Space Summary
• Technical information
• Whole building and wall sections - Roof, wall and foundation
Specific details for technological innovations and standards that will be incorporated into the design.

• Drawing line-weights: Use requirements in syllabus.
