Project 1: Form & Function:

Expression of Truth/Beauty

In this project we took a look at the relationship between form and function. We try to express the beauty of the design through the truth of implementing the function, this meaning that by only thinking about solving the problem the true beauty of the design is shown. The problem we need to solve is a 30' x 40' opening in an existing bridge, by using the mechianisms of common objects found in a home. This is my Solution.

Span Prototypes

These three bridges were the prototypes I used to construct my first thoughts on how to solve this problem.

Howrah Bridge:

Bridge Type: Cantilever Bridge

Mohammad VI Bridge:

Bridge Type: Cable stayed Bridge

Sydney Harbour Bridge:

Bridge Type: Arch Bridge

Movement Analogies

In this stage of the project we had to pick some objects commonly found in a home and draft out how the mechanisms of these objects work.

In this stage of the project we had to pick some objects commonly found in a home, and brainstorm ideas on how the mechanisms of these objects and combining them with the span prototype bridges that would create the 40' x 30' opening needed.

2D Design and Transformation Process

I ended up choosing the Cork Opener as my object and the arch bridge as the bridge prototype.

Tilting the bridge in my opinion was the best way of making space for the Cork opener to make the opening. The intial design was very basic but as time went on it started to transform and evolve, this dramatic change happened simply by focusing purely on the function of the project.

This Section shows the 3-D transformation of the project aswell as the 3-D Movement of my objects Mechanism.
